PDF to practice test

Turn a PDF of practice questions into a quiz you can take

If your practice questions are sitting in a PDF, you're studying with the answers in plain sight and no way to keep score. ExamYeti reads the questions in the file and turns them into an interactive practice test.

The whole file is imported on the free plan; the first 25 questions are unlocked.

This is not an AI quiz generator Many "PDF to quiz" tools read your lecture notes and write new questions about them. ExamYeti does something different: it finds the questions, answer options and correct answers that are already written in your PDF. If your file is notes or a textbook chapter, with no questions in it, this isn't the right tool.

What kind of PDF works

Works well

  • A text-based PDF, where you can select and copy the words
  • Numbered questions with lettered answer options (A, B, C, D)
  • The correct answer marked for each question, or in an answer key
  • Optional explanations, which are kept with the question
  • Exhibits, diagrams and screenshots placed under the question, which are imported with it

Doesn't work yet

  • Scanned PDFs and photos of pages. If you can't select the text, ExamYeti can't read it. It will tell you, and ask for a text-based copy.
  • Notes, slides or chapters with no questions in them
  • Pictures that sit far from their question, such as an appendix of exhibits at the end. A question that mentions an exhibit without one nearby is flagged.

How the import works

  1. Choose your file. It's read in your browser, which keeps the import quick even for long files.
  2. Review the result. You see how many questions were found before you start. On a paid plan you can fix anything the import got wrong in the question editor.
  3. Study. Take the questions as a timed practice exam or as flashcards.

Questions that aren't multiple choice

Drag-and-drop, hotspot and simulation questions can't be answered by picking a letter. ExamYeti keeps them as review-only cards, which show the question and reveal its answer. They appear in flashcards and are left out of scored exams.

If the PDF doesn't import cleanly

PDF layouts vary a lot. If yours doesn't come through, you have two other routes: paste the text straight in, or put the questions in our spreadsheet template and save it as CSV, one row per question. The template is the most reliable option for a set you'll reuse.

Use material you have the right to use

Import questions from a book or course you bought, from your instructor, or that you wrote. Your files are private to your account. Please don't upload real exam content that was shared in breach of a certification vendor's rules; it puts your certification at risk, and it's against our terms.

Import your PDF and see what comes out

Import one file free. The whole file is read, and the first 25 questions are yours to practice. No card needed.
